So last weekend I rallied a group of mates together where we took full advantage of the 25 degree weather and headed for a hike in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, more commonly known as the Gordon's Bay Crystal Pools.
Having never done this trail before, we didn't know what to expect. We took a drive out to Gordon's Bay and shortly after the Sunbird Lodge we stopped to obtain our permits for the hike and then began our journey 'up the mountain'.
I say 'up the mountain' in inverted commas as although the hike is within a reserve, there are plenty of rocks that need climbing and edges that need avoiding.
It's a pleasant hike and extremely safe, with walkers passing by throughout the trail. What's so beautiful about this experience is the crystal pools along the way. There are three in total and it takes about 45 minutes to reach the first one & then the other two are only a few metres away.
It's peaceful and picturesque. Not too easy, but not too difficult either. It's nice to take a picnic and stop for lunch. Be careful of baboons though. Although we weren't lucky enough to encounter one, rumour has it they enjoy pinching your meals. If you're daring enough, it's also fun to go for a swim in the pools and jump off a few rocks. It was such an enjoyable experience & an awesome way to experience the great outdoors. A simple warning though; if you're body is somewhat unprepared like mine was, there is a huge possibility your muscles will be stiff and your legs will be aching for days after.
Although the hike wasn't too strenuous at the time, I suppose my body wasn't quite prepared for such an intense performance.
With legs too sore to climb a flight of stairs for three days after, it's a good pain & I still highly recommend this adventure for anyone who's up for it. :)
