The Spirit of Ubuntu

There is something about Africans (about South African's specifically) this is unique and doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. It's ubuntu. African's have this thing called Ubuntu.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, "Ubuntu is about the essence of being human, it is part of the gift that Africa will give the world. It embraces hospitality, caring about others, being able to go the extra mile for the sake of others. We believe that a person is a person through another person, that my humanity is caught up, bound up, inextricably, with yours."

That is true. And that's exactly what we saw this weekend at the annual Ubuntu Festival in St. George's Mall Cape Town. In celebration of Madiba's 92nd Birthday, the people of Cape Town came together to party and rejoice,and nothing brings people together better than music and food.

On Saturday the public was invited to dedicate their 67 minutes for Madiba by chopping, slicing and peeling vegetables for soups that would be distributed to shelters in the area. Sunday saw St. George's Mall transform into a music festival and cultural cuisine quarter, offering a mix of local performances and various food stalls.

Every colour, culture, age and gender was there to celebrate. Everybody joined together in joy, peace, friendliness and love.

It was Ubuntu!
